The nerds couldn’t overthrow the royals at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards.

In an awards show that was more a coronation than a competition, “The King’s Speech” was named Best Picture over “The Social Network.”

In the end, it seemed, the depiction of Facebook’s formation was too cold a tale to pull off an Oscar coup against the inspirational story of a speech impaired king who finds his voice to lead a nation.

“The King’s Speech” went on to win four of the evening’s top prizes including Best Director for Tom Hooper and Best Actor for Colin Firth.

“The Social Network” won three awards in all, but its highest honor was a Best Adapted Screenplay statue for Aaron Sorkin.

In all, despite having a pair of youthful and aesthetically gifted co-hosts in Anne Hathaway and James Franco, this year’s telecast was chronically short on surprises.

The biggest shock was not the image of Franco dressed up as Marilyn Monroe, but an inadvertent F-bomb dropped by Melissa Leo while she was accepting Best Supporting Actress for “The Fighter.”

Firth’s win was wholly expected, as was Natalie Portman’s victory in the Best Actress category for her role as a demented ballerina in “Black Swan.”

“I have a feeling my career’s just peaked,” Firth joked.

The English star went on to praise his fellow nominees, screenwriter David Seidler and director Tom Hooper. He also expressed his gratitude to Tom Ford — the fashion designer and film director who guided Firth to his first nomination last year for “A Single Man.”

Like Firth, Portman has had ample practice with acceptance speeches this awards season, having already picked up a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild prize.

In addition to her director Daron Aronofsky, Portman thanked: “Everyone who has ever hired me.”

Closing with a shout out to “My family, my friends and my love.”

The supporting Oscars were monopolized by “The Fighter.”

Accepting his statue, Bale poked fun at co-star Melissa Leo, who tested the censors when accepting her own Oscar earlier in the evening.

“Melissa, I’m not going to drop the F-bomb like she did. I’ve done that plenty before,” Bale said.

The Welsh actor went on to thank director David O. Russell and the real-life inspiration for his role as Dicky Eklund, before forgetting his wife’s name.

Leo had dominated earlier awards shows, making her obscenity more surprising than her victory.

She won Best Supporting Actress for her role as the tough-talking, big haired mother in “The Fighter.”

“I’m just shaking in my boots here,” Leo said, before putting the telecast’s tape delay to good use by dropping an F-bomb to express her pleasure and shock.

Aaron Sorkin has picked up his first Oscar for chronicling the formation of Facebook in “The Social Network.”

“I wrote this movie, but David Fincher made this movie and he did it with an ungodly artfulness,” Sorkin said.

Its main competition for the top prize, “The King’s Speech” also picked up a writing prize, with David Seidler winning Best Adapted Screenplay.

“I accept on behalf of all the stutterers through out the world. We have a voice thanks to you the Academy,” Seidler said.

A victory for “Inside Job” over “Exit Through the Gift Shop” in the Best Documentary category deprived the show of what might have been a moment of excitement. Many had hoped that elusive graffiti star Banksy would use the Oscars to cause artistic mayhem.

As expected, “Toy Story 3″ beat out competition from “How to Train Your Dragon” and “The Illusionist” to pick up Best Animated Feature.

Rock star Trent Reznor has added Oscar to his list of honors. The Nine Inch Nails frontman and collaborator Atticus Ross won an award for his doleful score for “The Social Network,” beating out Hans Zimmer for “Inception” and Alexandre Desplat for “The King’s Speech.”

Also in the music realm, Randy Newman won his second Oscar for “We Belong Together” for “Toy Story 3.”

In technical categories, Best Art Direction went to “Alice and Wonderland” and “Inception” cinematographer Wally Pfister picked up a statue for his shots of swirling rooms and collapsing dreamscapes.

Earlier in the evening, Anne Hathaway and James Franco kicked off the 83rd annual Academy Awards with a comedic film that saw the actors spliced in clips from Best Picture nominees such as “Inception” and “The Social Network.”

The two youthful hosts were tapped in an effort by the Academy to bring in younger viewers.

“You look very appealing to the younger demographic as well,” Hathaway joked with her co-star at the start of the show.

From the stage, the pair gave shout-outs to their mothers — with Hathaway’s mother reminding her daughter to stand up straight and Franco’s grandmother mooned after Mark Wahlberg.

In the five minute film that started the telecast, last year’s host Alec Baldwin appeared to give the pair advice, but was “incepted” before he could share his wisdom.

The two co-hosts also sparred with an onscreen Mark Zuckerberg and Mickey Ward, and met Jeff Bridges’ Rooster Cogburn in a snow streaked forest.

Oprah’s Oprah Moment: I Have a Half-Sister!

The big secret that Winfrey had been touting: she discovered, last fall, that she had a half-sister, Patricia, living in Milwaukee. Patricia was born to Oprah’s mother when Oprah was nine years old, and given up for adoption without Oprah’s knowing it. She spent years in and out of foster homes, eventually had a family of her own, and in 2007, she came to discover that she was in fact related to the talk show host. (And if those were not enough strange twists, though Patricia was not named by Oprah’s mother, she has the same name as Oprah’s other half-sister, Pat, who died in 2003.)

What unfolded afterward was what, for most of us, would be the stuff of bizarre dreams: America’s top talk-show host interviewing her own family members about a secret that had eluded her for half her life. She asked Patricia—who was remarkably calm considering the circumstances—how she felt to suddenly find herself a celebrity sibling; she asked her own mother how she felt about the secret that she kept, then told her mother, in an address to the camera, that she should “let go” the shame of the adoption as Oprah had let go her own teen pregnancy.

Bristol Palin beat Jennifer Grey on Dancing

Bristol Palin beat Jennifer Grey on Dancing

Jennifer Grey beat Bristol Palin on Dancing

Finally after all – the noise, nonsense, conspiracy theories, and on the TV hit – Bristol Palin lost.
And the loss of large, if the third place can be considered large, it is likely that fans in search of “Dancing with the Stars” Mirror Ball trophy long (long) after the ‘expected. Jennifer Grey – who have sometimes struggled with tendinitis in the knee and a broken record, but Friday – won the 11th season of “Dancing” along with her partner Derek Hough. Kyle Massey, former star of Disney Channel, “That’s So Raven”, landed second.
Cool heads and brave, Palin has worked hard and gained some competition hoofing during the course of the season. And while she was a surrogate mother to millions of viewers of a similar talent, was also the question of the mother.
For some, a vote of Bristol was a vote for Sarah Palin. Like much of what matters in the final position of Palin – Bristol determined by voting viewers for or against it – will probably never be known. However, some really season 11 had become a 2012 survey of Sarah Palin do, that the enemies of Palin suggested the vote was rigged. Palin supporters – despite the former governor of Alaska itself – made fun of the load.
There was no discussion on this, though: the 11th season of “Dancing With the Stars” was different. “It ‘was definitely strange, and I do not know exactly why,” executive producer Conrad Green said in an interview last week. Of course he did: Bristol. ABC and “Dancing” Palin cleverly added to the cast, knowing that he had become a lightning rod. What could not or did not know the amount of sunshine. Palin does not have the top of the standings, and while the judges were always courteous, blogs are not – voting conspiracy charge (denied by Green) – and then was the man from Wisconsin who shot the TV when Palin resisted another vote.
But on Tuesday night did not work in your favor. While its total Monday was a combination of judge and viewer votes (both re-expressed as a percentage), on Tuesday night, which corresponded to the courts only: Palin has a total of 52 results from 60, Gray 58, Massey and 54. Add to the total on Monday, and the viewer votes, which meant one place – in third place.

Problem Bristol Palin to Dancing with the Stars

Problem Bristol Palin to Dancing with the Stars

bristol palin dancing stars
After Tuesday night, should be clearly obvious to anyone even pay attention to season 11 and ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” are – for lack of a better phrase.
Thanks for – or blame – to millions of voters who have maximized (critics would say exploited) the various methods of voting ABC, Palin has catapulted past dancers beyond the reach brass ring.
Why is a “problem”?
A couple of reasons – ABC, the BBC (which has the program) and the “phase”, has long sought to remove any stain that somehow this is a popularity contest than a talent contest, and so far generally the case. Some limited exceptions – no reason to go beyond the here and now.
But the show – even if aware that his base includes long-spectator, viewers of the Republican Party – not remotely thought it would become a referendum on national policy, or the Tea Party or its patrons more visible, Sarah Palin .
However, in fact, is. To a certain extent, ABC knew exactly what he was doing – getting the daughter of a dynamic and controversial political figure (“leader” is too strong a word here) knowing that her daughter can finally become a system – in the mother.
Palin has since been led by a flood of votes from viewers who come via text messages, mobile phones on the network’s website, mobile y. Depending on the number of e-mail to a voter is, sometime could easily cast dozens of votes for a competitor.
Is this fair? Sure. The rules are the rules, and “American Idol” has learned, it is impossible to stop ballot stuffing (with the exception of the votes generated by the computer, which apparently are easy to identify) and an entertainment show probably doesn’t want in the activity to tell viewers that they cannot do something. This should be entertaining – is not a vote for public office.
But the danger for ABC and “Stage” is this: if Palin loses, their fans will demand that the votes are revealed, or question the correctness of the final count of the judges.
But if Palin wins, “Dancing with the Stars” has become, finally, into something totally different and categorically worse – a political class referendum.
So my last question: Can you win?
I think – the emphasis on “thought” – which is not possible, according to the ABC and the structure of “phase” of the evening finals. Recall that last year’s finalists were divided into two dance nights, and viewers got to vote on the first night. The judges cast their votes for the last two dances – not to mention the audience.
As ABC / structure “ETAP” next week? I’m not sure yet, is a winner announced at the end of the afternoon Tuesday, 9 to 11, and if we consider two dances during the night, a victory for Palin is probably out of reach.
Once again, it’s a maybe. But I did the math (the best of my limited ability) and there is a path to victory – which is almost certain to stop, but next week because the judges the final say.

The last time Lady Gaga

The last time Lady Gaga gave a long speech, that the stomach a long strange metaphor, extended beyond the flesh, human rights and military-related tangentially to the piece of bringing back the VMAs. During Thanksgiving, the pop star keeps food in the kitchen, Twitter a picture of a plate Little Monster, presumably, is not made of real little monster, but found a way to make a speech.
Friday night at the stop of his tour in Poland Monster Ball, Lady Gaga has had a couple of points again to speak: his next album, “Born This Way”, is great. In fact, the principle that it is epic (“I pledge to give the best album of the decade, just for you.”) And the most interesting thing that is sick of seeing freak-flag flying as a trend in pop culture.
“The funny thing is that some people reduce the release of a brand,” he said in tears Gaga. “They think that now it is fashionable to be free. They think it’s fashionable to be enthusiastic about their identity. When in truth, there is nothing fashionable ‘born that way.” ‘Born so is a spirit, and it is this sense that we all share. It’ s something much deeper than a wig or lipstick or a dress or a [expletive] to dress the meat. ” Born This Way ‘is upon us, “Born This Way” is about what they lose sleep and scares us. “Then he played relatively optimistic” Telephone “, with the collaboration of Beyoncé dance away their worries that have helped make” The Hungry Monster, “a multiplatinum success.
Most of the speech by Lady Gaga seems to be a direct response to a handful of songs pop star empowerment of women have launched in recent months. Almost all took place last week in the American Music Awards: Pink “Raise Your Glass,” where she screams “loser” and “Nitty Gritty Dirty monsters” that can not be overly burdensome, “Katy Perry artificial fire”, which encourages a frustrated listener, “You are original, cannot be replaced, and Kesha” We Are Who We Are “, which is held to let go of self-consciousness and” dancing as if we were stupid. ”
Although Lady Gaga has strongly argued for gay rights – mainly in support of LGBT members of the military – from its early days, when it was revealed that she identifies as bisexual, pink and Kesha Perry spoke of the inspiration for his songs. Perry spent his video is better, an initiative to encourage young people to hang gay intimidate and keep an eye on the future. Rosa has a gay wedding in the video for her song, like the one discussed to launch his best friend a lesbian.
Comments wig and lipstick, in particular, look set to Nicki Minaj newcomer, who has embraced a gay fan base, got an assortment of step-by-is false and has launched a lipstick in collaboration with the MAC, an associated company Gaga for most of its Viva Glam campaign to fight AIDS. Minaj began his career while hinting that he could be bisexual, although the granting of an interview in Out magazine cover in which he refused to confirm his sexual orientation, the rapper has been removed from homosexuals in recent months distanced himself from previous comments.
So Lady Gaga crying because he doubts the motives of its competitors, or you pissed that they were able to release their records cleared before finishing the recording of the new masterpiece? There is definitely room for the pop star to be more involved with a great civil rights struggle of our time. And it was – and remains – a lot of room for freedom songs in the canon of rock & roll.
